Mountain Wave

What does it mean? Who are we? What are we all about?

The mountain wave is a business set up to provide people with exceptional service, it’s the core mission of this group. Granted, it seems like quite an obvious one, but it really is at the very heart of what we want to do here. On the face of it, mountain wave is a guiding and coaching business, set up by myself (Brian) after years, and years of pondering, wondering, hoping and dreaming. I’ve a wealth of experience providing tours to clients from all over the world, I’ve invested in my learning, becoming a UESCA certified ultra running coach, ML training and other valuable outdoor qualifications, and more-over, I commit to continually invest in my development as an outdoor professional. Very early on in my guiding career I established a personable touch to my trips that I felt very much separated me from the rest. Quite quickly, I became very aware of the bigger impact I was having on the planet, driving a bus all across Scotland. I also didn’t feel the company I worked for cared for the communities they so heavily benefited from visiting. So I left. With exceptional service comes a commitment to sustainability - and not the, just saying it kind, the taking action kind. It’s my ambition for Mountain Wave to become a well known, established community of like-minded outdoor professionals and guides in Scotland, coming together to provide exceptional experiences in a sustainable and planet-friendly way.

Pre-Covid times, i’d left my job, started building a business and invested a lot of time and effort into focusing on it. I went to workshops, seminars and began putting in place the foundations of a business that would be a guiding business for myself, as a self-employed guide. But as you might have expected, COVID halted these plans. Without a solid job, and no history or 6 months worth of previous self-employed bank statements I wasn’t able to access any funding. Other than to join universal credit. It was such a blow and I felt immensely crushed. “Perhaps this means It was very silly to risk leaving my job, to become an outdoor guide and experience provider”, I thought. It wasn’t all bad though, we moved to the highlands as a result of having nothing left for us in Glasgow and got ourselves some local jobs - things beginning to look up! It wasn’t long before the ambitions, the dreams came flooding back and all of a sudden, I find myself in this much greater place, with actually - much better prospects as a guide.

Enter, Mountain Wave.

Outside of my working life, I’ve been an aspiring athlete, trying to be competitive in mountain running within the UK, I could never have dreamt that one day I might find work within this sport that I love so dearly, so I have well and truly decided to put all my eggs in one basket again and go for it! Everything you see here is from my brain. The creation of this very website, all the products, from the tours, to the coaching service and beyond, especially all of the pictures - it’s important to me that authenticity is visible throughout this business, so you won’t see any stock images from adobe, just my own edited ones. I am very much the kind of person that has too many ideas, but never enough time, memory or even necessarily ability to bring them to life. So condensing my offering here hasn’t been easy and there has been many sleepless nights thinking about how to offer the best service, whilst delivering interesting products that are relevant and (I hope) sought after.

So, whether you choose to join me on a guided experience, something different that isn’t about pre-conceived ideas of adventure, or are an aspiring athlete (just like me!) who wants to enjoy some coaching form a newly qualified coach - keep in touch! I love to chat and I hope you always only drink good coffee.

Brian.
